Sustainable Innovation: Giving a Kitchen Display a Second—and Third—Life

Sustainable Innovation: Giving a Kitchen Display a Second—and Third—Life

It’s the end of the year and, like many of you, we’re reflecting on our accomplishments. This past year, MagickHome was proud to participate in both the Toronto Interior Design Show (IDS) and the National Home Show (NHS) for the first time. While planning our booth for IDS, the first of the two shows, we were struck with inspiration from the show’s theme, “Moving Parts”.

IDS described their theme as a focus on “products incorporating sustainable materials and components, designs adapting to how humans want to live and interact now, and work resulting from reinvented manufacturing.

Sustainability has long been an important pillar of MagickHome. It’s why we strive to create as many products as possible using innovative materials and methods that use fewer resources, donate a portion of each purchase towards our ongoing tree-planting initiative, and partner with Habitat for Humanity to encourage customers to donate their old cabinetry and appliances when they renovate.

With the IDS theme and our values in mind, we decided to create a display that was not just temporary, and came up with a plan to tweak the display for use at NHS as well. Wanting to make it go even further, we decided we would place the display in our Richmond Hill showroom once both shows were over, where it would have a permanent home.

The Process
Making our vision come true required meticulous planning and collaboration among our team members. We integrated additional sustainability features into our display, like ensuring it was plastic-free and using rope as a design element instead of extra wood. The final outcome seamlessly integrates sustainable design principles, showcasing that eco-consciousness can coexist with an enhanced home environment. (It also got a ton of compliments.)

The Transformation
After months spent planning and creating our display, our team gave it some adjustments to fit within the parameters of NHS, including removing the ceiling and light fixtures and changing some of the display layout. We’re happy to report we pulled it off without a hitch!

The Showroom
The transformed IDS unit now stands out as one of the centerpieces in our Richmond Hill showroom, illustrating the power of innovation in creating cutting-edge, sustainable home solutions. We’re proud of both our environmental efforts and the display’s beautiful, unique design.
